“Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia”: Interview with Ulrike Ottinger
Abstract
Ottinger tells Janet A. Kaplan about the making of the film Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia, and her artistic inspirations shaped during her studies in Paris and Berlin where she was influenced by Fassbinder. Contrary to what one may suspect she has always liked classical silent movies, especially Stroheim. She also highly values Altman, Scorsese and independent American filmmakers. She also speaks of feminism, queer theory and her Jewish roots. References to all the sources can be found in her film. But what matters most is Inner Mongolia and the region’s culture, myths, rituals, songs, handicraft and first of all wonderful nature and landscapes. What she was interested most were the relationships and cultural contrasts between the natives and European visitors. The real filmmaking-related problems inseparably intermingled with the fictional story she planned to tell.
