The Role of Stereotypes
Abstract
Dyer explores a notion of stereotype. Starting from Walter Lippmann’s definition of the term, he tries to analyze its individual elements and aspects – a world-organizing function, brevity, referentiality and ability to convey values. Dyer takes two differing perspectives – a sociological approach (how stereotypes function in the social mindset) or an aesthetic approach (how stereotypes function in various narratives).
