Illusory World, True Problems: The Discrete Charm of Pathology in the Work of Claude Chabrol
Abstract
Claude Chabrol, for more than 50 years now, keeps on returning and referring in his films to his background. He portrays rich bourgeoisie, and conservative middle class with an incredible understanding of the customs and relations characteristic of this social class, but managing to avoid any sentimentalism or nostalgia. The article portrays Chabrols films (La Femme infidele,1969; Les Biches, 1968; Que la bete meure, 1969; La Rupture, 1970 and La Decade prodigieuse, 1971) as revealing the hypocrisy, acceptance of a specific system of values and other pathologies of this social sphere.
