Reżyser, scenarzysta, producent filmowy, profesor sztuk filmowych; absolwent Państwowej Wyższej Szkoły Filmowej w Łodzi (1967); w swym najbardziej aktywnym zawodowo okresie związany twórczo m.in. z nurtem kina moralnego niepokoju. Wyreżyserował m.in. Strukturę kryształu (1969), Iluminację (1972), Barwy ochronne (1976), Spiralę (1978), Constans (1980), a w późniejszym okresie choćby Stan posiadania (1989), Cwał (1995), Życie jako śmiertelną chorobę przenoszoną drogą płciową (2000) czy film Persona non grata (2005). Laureat Złotego Lwa w Wenecji oraz Grand Prix Festiwalu Polskich Filmów Fabularnych w Gdyni.
