Reżyserka filmowa i teatralna, scenarzystka; absolwentka praskiej szkoły filmowej FAMU (1971). W latach 1972-1981 należała do kierowanego przez A. Wajdę Zespołu Realizatorów Filmowych „X”. Wyreżyserowała m.in. Aktorów prowincjonalnych (1978), Gorączkę (1980), Kobietę samotną (1981), Gorzkie żniwa (1985, nominacja do Oscara), Europę, Europę (1990, nominacja do Oscara), Całkowite zaćmienie (1995), Plac Waszyngtona (1997), Kopię mistrza (2005), W ciemności (2011). Od 1981 r. pracuje głównie w Europie Zachodniej i USA, mieszka we Francji.
