On the New Edition of Chopin’s Correspondence, 1839–1849
Abstract
This text assesses volume 3 of Korespondencja Fryderyka Chopina [Fryderyk Chopin’s Correspondence], covering the letters written between 1839 and 1849, edited by Zofia Helman, Zbigniew Skowron and Hanna Wroblewska-Straus. The editorial principles of the publication and the manner of their implementation are subjected to critical scrutiny. Emphasis is placed on the breadth and detail of the commentary, its informational value, and its function as a historical background presented within a broad cultural context. The masterly handling of the sources is also acknowledged, reflecting deep consideration of the distinctive character of the original material and of the manner in which it is now presented in a modernised version. A small number of minor errors in the commentary are noted.
