The Life of the Wrocław Cantor Christoph Bremer in the Light of Indexical Sources
Abstract
Biographies of figures important to musical culture can be reconstructed not only from archival documents and music sources, but also from so-called “indexical sources”: accounts that interpret an individual’s life within its social context. The method of triangulating several such accounts brings both facts and their interpretations into view. Reconstructed from his album amicorum, Christoph Köler’s wedding oration in his honour and Elias Maior’s notes, the biography of the Wrocław cantor Christoph Bremer affords a fuller understanding of his life and cultural milieu.
