Is an Anonymous 'Completorium' in the Warsaw Music Society Archives a Lost Work by Stachowicz?
Abstract
An anonymous manuscript of the Completorium survives in the Archives of the Warsaw Music Society. Although it has been linked in the literature with Stachowicz’s output, neither the work nor the question of its attribution has yet received sufficient attention. This article examines the work’s structure and stylistic features in comparison with the known music of Fr Damian. The comparison reveals not only clear similarities of composition technique, but also direct borrowings, demonstrating that the cycle is made up of works by Stachowicz. Considerable evidence nevertheless suggests that it is a compilation of sections written at different times, and that a copyist may also have influenced their selection and ordering.
