The First Medals of the Royal University of Warsaw (1818–1819). Designs, Meanings, Contexts

Abstract
The first medals of the University of Warsaw, designed in the year 1818 – the medal commemorating its inauguration and the award medals bestowed during art exhibitions held there – must be considered important signs of identity and prestige of the University in the period of the Kingdom of Poland. An analysis of the sources and a presentation of hitherto unpublished designs for these numismatic pieces (most probably drawn by Zygmunt Vogel) located in the manuscript collection at the Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius enable us to better understand the meanings of these medals and their contexts. Motifs derived from ancient literature (Horace) and art (the Belvedere Torso) were applied in their design; the inauguration medal probably conveyed current political contents, constructing the image of Tsar Alexander I as a patron of sciences, possibly with an allusion to his role as the “reviver” of Poland. The form of the award medals must be analysed in the context of the medals issued in the 17th and 18th century by art academies in Paris, Antwerp and London.

Zbigniew Michalczyk is a graduate of the Institute of Art History, University of Warsaw, since 2007 employed at the Institute of Arts, Polish Academy of Sciences, from the very beginning at the Catalogue of Art Monuments in Poland Unit; since 2018 a professor of the Institute of Arts, Polish Academy of Sciences, since 2024 a full professor. His research interests focus mainly on issues in painting and graphic arts of the 17th to 19th centuries, the functioning of artists in the societies of Central Europe, and the beginnings of those artists’ academic educations. He is also involved in the cataloguing of historical monuments on the former eastern borderlands of the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania.
