Inter-ethnic Migration in Polish Theatre in Galicia: The Case of Andrzej Mielewski

Abstract
The article presents the profile of Andrzej Mielewski (b. 1866 or 1867, d. 1916), actor and theatre director. It focuses on his ethnic origins, using them as a point of departure to discuss their influence on his career, repertoire, and his relations with other theatre workers. The author is not interested in Mielewski’s ethnicity in political terms, as a clue that would allow to determine the actor’s national affiliation; instead, she analyses his case from the perspective of migration, of moving between different complementary or conflicting ways of defining one’s identity and belonging somewhere through language, faith, and memory. The articles also draws on classic historical research about Galicia and its ethnic relations, and on social anthropology studying societies with a hybrid cultural structure.

Her interests include 19th- and 20th-century theatre, both in terms of changes in dramatic form and issues related to acting and staging. Editor of theatre documents, including Stanisław Wyspiański's scripts. She is preparing a monograph on Wyspiański's theatrical work in the years 1898–1907.
