Abstract

After Karol Szymanowski’s death, most european music periodicals, as well as daily newspapers and cultural magazines, took note of the passing of this great composer. analysis of the facts mentioned in printed obituaries alone succes for one to appreciate the Polish composer’s standing in music circles and among music critics in a given country. Te reactions in Germany are interesting because of the special political and ideological situation and the relations between Poland and the German Reich. The author’s aim was to collect articles, obituaries and mentions of the Polish composer that appeared in the German-language press in 1937, published mostly in Germany, but also in Austria and Switzerland. These are quotedat length in the appendix. Although the selection is far from exhaustive, this anthology may prove to be a useful source for scholars studying Szymanowski’s life and legacy
