Abstract
The article is devoted to contacts between the Polish sculptor Edward Wittig (1879–1941) and the Russian poet and critic Maximilian Voloshin (1877–1932). The history of their Paris acquaintance, and the history of the bust of Voloshin sculpted by Wittig and exhibited, under the title The Poet (Le poète), at the Salon du Champ-de-Mars in 1909, are presented on the basis of source materials, including Wittig’s extant letters to Voloshin. Another topic of analysis is Voloshin’s article entitled Edward Wittig (On the possible paths of sculpture), published in the St Petersburg magazine “Apollon” in 1913, which constitutes very interesting evidence of the reception of the Polish sculptor’s early oeuvre.
