Last Performance of “Forefathers' Eve” on 30 January 1968
Magdalena Raszewska
(Poland)
Abstract
This article discusses the circumstances of the last performance of Kazimierz Dejmek's Forefathers' Eve on 30 January 1968, after which, in accordance with earlier announcements, the play was taken off the billboard. The performance and the demonstration that followed it have become the stuff of legend. The author compiles various types of accounts in an attempt to determine the most likely version of events: the number of legal and illegal spectators, the means of getting into the auditorium, the reactions of the audience during and after the performance, and the course of the demonstration in defense of the play, partially manipulated by the authorities, after which thirty-five people were detained. The article is supplemented by several archival documents on these events from the archives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
