Warsaw Tollhouses in the Era of Classicism and Their Influence

Abstract
In the first half of the 19th century tollhouses, that is posts of customs control guard, were a distinctive type of building in Classicist architecture in the Polish lands. These small buildings functioned throughout Europe at the time; in Poland they were built in larger cities. These characteristically shaped masonry buildings were an expression of the unification of functional and formal solutions applied in the construction of public utility buildings in the Kingdom of Poland. Particularly distinctive, and the most imposing, were the Warsaw tollhouses, designed by Jakub Kubicki, one of the most eminent architects of Classicism in Poland. Traces of their influence can be found in other buildings of this kind in the Polish lands, including the particularly interesting tollhouses in Cracow, then a Free City.

Paweł Dettloff is a historian of art holding a doctoral degree in the Humanities in the area of Art Sciences (Jagiellonian University), an assistant professor at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences (The Catalogue of Art Monuments in Poland Unit). His research focuses on architecture and visual arts from the 16th to the 19th century and on the issues of art conservation in both historical and contemporary aspects.
