Abstract
The article analyzes a hitherto unrecognized iconographic source concerning the castle in Prószków (German: Proskau, Czech: Pruskov) near Opole, proposing a new chronology for the development of this residence and a reinterpretation of the origins of its architectural forms. At the same time, it contributes to research on the function of architectural drawings in the early modern period, particularly with regard to issues of copying and authorship. Although construction works on the castle in Prószków began in 1563, scholarship has long maintained that most of the structure extant today originated in the 17th century. The starting point for revising this view is a drawing documenting the appearance of the castle in 1609, held in the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Vienna. Its analysis makes it possible to substantially assess the current state of research, indicating that almost the entire structure of the residence dates from the 16th century. The reconstruction of the building’s original form allows it to be interpreted as an early example of the reception of the palazzo in fortezza model proposed by Serlio, connected with the circulation of manuscript architectural patterns within the imperial court. At the same time, the analysis allows the Prószków residence to be situated among the most important residential foundations to have were made in Silesia, and in the entire Crown of Bohemia, during the 16th century.
