Sources of the Renaissance Revival Style Forms Used in the Early 20th-Century Expansion of Książ Castle

Abstract
Extant archival materials on the expansion and restructuring of Książ Castle (German: Fürstenstein) in the Renaissance revival style, carried out in the period 1908–1925, made it possible to determine the process of shaping the relevant architectural conception. The project was implemented over the period of nearly twenty years by Hans Heinrich XV von Hochberg, Prince von Pless, under the architectural supervision of first Ludwig Scheinert and later Humbert Walcher von Molthein. In the course of the venture, the stylistics of the architecture of the castle’s new wings, the west and the north one, was based on application of forms derived from the native Silesian and the German renaissance with their concurrent reduction and interpretation. The effect of the current analysis resulted in that the chronology of works carried out in the early 20th century has been determined, the selection of the style has been explained, a comparative analysis of architectural forms constituting historical quotations or reminiscences of forms from ca. 1600 has been performed, and the origin of those forms – from Nuremberg, Heidelberg, Fürstenau, or from Ziębice (German: Münsterberg), Oleśnica (German: Oels) and Brzeg (German: Brieg) – has been determined.

Arch., is a professor at the Department of the History of Architecture, Art and Technology at the Faculty of Architecture of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Her research on architectural history focuses on 19th- and 20th-century architecture in Wrocław and in Silesia, public and industrial architecture, construction technologies, and the issues of architectural detail and colour schemes as applied in architectural structures.
