HISTORY OF THE “BULLETIN OF ART HISTORY”
The “Bulletin of Art History” quarterly, published since 1932, is the oldest national academic journal dedicated to art history. It was created at the instigation of Oskar Sosnowski as a periodical of the Department of Architecture at the Warsaw University of Technology. At the time the Department and the Editorial team of the “Bulletin of Art History and Culture”, affiliated e.g. Witold Kieszkowski, Stanisław Lorentz, Juliusz Starzyński, Jerzy Szablowski, Michał Walicki, Jan Zachwatowicz, and Stanisław Herbst. Following WW II, it was the State Institute of Art (later: Institute of Art History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, IS PAN) that published the quarterly. Since 1950 the journal has been using the shortened name: “Bulletin of Art History”. A year later Stanisław Lorentz became its Editor-in-Chief, to hold the position for 30 years, until 1981. After his death, the function of the Editor-in-Chief was performed subsequently by: Stanisław Mossakowski (1982-88), Jerzy Kowalczyk (1988-96), and Piotr Paszkiewicz (1996-2002). Since 2002 Stanisław Mossakowski has continued as the journal’s Editor-in-Chief.
In 1982 a special fascicle was issued (nos. 1-4) containing the List of Journal’s Content 1932-81; a similar list spanning 1983-98 was published in 1999 (nos.1-2).
