Abstract

The author introduces readers to Roger Deakin and his debut book Waterlog (1999) – a record of a series of swimming expeditions in various parts of Great Britain, at present considered to be one of the canonical texts of the British New Nature Writing movement. Justyna Chmielewska attempts to point out several themes from Waterlog resonating with today’s anthropological reflection on our relationship with water and, more broadly, the so-called blue humanities. One of her guides to Deakin’s world is Robert Macfarlane – a close friend of the author of Waterlog who, in a sense, continues the latter’s legacy of reflective and, at the same time, engaged (and often joyful) nature writing.
