Abstract

The purpose of this text is to analyse Jerzy Zachara’s geometric nudes consisting of rounded lines and circles. First, the artist’s technology of drawing a variety of lines was examined by using his texts and drawing theory. This was followed by reflections on the functions and symbolism of lines and circles inspired by, e.g. Wassily Kandinsky, of essential importance to Zachara. Connections between the artist’s gestures and calligraphy were also outlined by referring to Tim Ingold’s anthropology of the line. Then, the movement and rhythm of lines and circles were discussed by applying the theory of Katarzyna Kobro and Władysław Strzemiński. The question of the femininity of shape was also explored. Finally, referring to the theory of the nude (Kenneth Clark, Lynda Nead, Maria Poprzęcka) and the concepts of Ilse and Pierre Garnier, the author analysed whether sensuality and abstraction can be reconciled, and described the nature of arrangements of forces between actors in the linear-geometric nude.
