Alcohol, Violence, and Workplace Safety in Polish Theatre

Abstract
The article discusses issues related to alcohol use in the theatre environment. Drawing on the results of a survey on alcohol and drug use in Polish theatres, with responses from 304 representatives of various theatre professions, the authors examine the impact of substance use on safety and the quality of artistic work, as well as on different forms of violence within these institutions. The first part of the text discusses how working while intoxicated or hungover affects safety, with reference to the concept of acceptable risk. The second part points to a correlation between alcohol use and violent behaviour, considered in the context of consent-based working practices. The article argues that the presence of alcohol in the theatre disrupts work at every stage and in every dimension. Both the survey and the article aim to initiate a broader discussion on the impact of alcohol on the functioning of theatre institutions.
