The Parental Complaint
Activism of Polish Parents of Transgender and Non-Heterosexual Children

Abstract
The author examines the activism of Polish parents of transgender and non-heterosexual children. She traces the trajectory through which parents of LGBT children have gradually become more visible and influential within queer discourse, a development that has gained particular momentum in recent years in relation to trans children. She considers how parent-led advocacy reshapes this discourse: which issues are brought to the forefront, how a focus on the family necessarily positions such advocacy politically, and how narratives of queer lives consequently come to revolve around coming out and family relationships. Many of these narratives normalize a standard trajectory of parental responses – from initial shock, often accompanied by hurtful or negative reactions, through acceptance, and ultimately to active engagement in campaigns, advocacy, or parent support groups. Finally, the author approaches parent advocacy and organizing as an inherently ambivalent phenomenon: on the one hand, it responds to genuine needs and generates important circuits of knowledge; on the other, it remains primarily centred on parents and their needs, while occupying a relatively conservative political position.
