From Queercore to the Culture of Non-normative Bedroom Producers

Abstract
The text describes the musical genre and cultural phenomenon of queercore – a historically queer form of punk – while exploring the relationship between punk and queerness. It addresses such aspects as “DIY culture”, anti-institutionalism, aesthetics of “amateurism” as well as “queer virtuosity” and its connections to “trash camp”. The examples discussed include Nina Hagen, Klaus Nomi, and, from the Polish scene, Gayga and Kosmetyki Mrs. Pinki. However the author expands the concept of “queercore” beyond the realm of punk music while preserving its ethos. This broader understanding makes it possible to describe the transformations in the music industry in the 21. century and to identify the role of the new “DIY culture” – the culture of bedroom producers and music prosumers. The essay examines works by Zawadzki and Dunajew as examples of this phenomenon.
