“Are the Chinese holding on?!”, or, Politics, Spectres, and Fleas in Wyspiański’s "The Wedding"

Abstract
Rejecting the reading habits, stereotypes, and clichés that have accumulated around Stanisław Wyspiański’s The Wedding over 125 years, the author offers her own interpretation of the play’s selected themes. Some quotations, although commonly used in Polish culture, oftentimes outside their original context, are not entirely clear or comprehensible. An analysis of a line from the play’s opening scene, the conversation between Headman and Journalist, allows her to reveal in the question about the Boxer Rebellion in China a pretext for explaining a different issue, culturally much closer to home yet usually overlooked: the peasant revolt of 1846 in Polish Galicia.
