Abstract

In February 1892, the municipal authorities of Krakow called for entries in a competition for the design of a stage curtain for the new Municipal Theater. The results of the competition were announced in April of the same year. Two awards were granted ex aequo to Jadwiga Boguska and Tomasz Lisiewicz but none of these projects was implemented. The design and execution of the curtain were ultimately entrusted to the painter Henryk Siemiradzki. The correspondence of Siemiradzki with Konrad Wentzl, a Krakow councilor, reveals interesting details related to the development of this work. The inauguration ceremony of the Siemiradzki’s curtain took place on 18 April 1894 in Krakow.
