PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Pamiętnik Teatralny uses double-blind peer review (the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers, and the reviewers do not know the identity of the authors at the time of the review) and requires a minimum of two independent peer reviewers, representing different locations and not employed at the institution where the author is affiliated, to review manuscript of research/review article for consideration in the journal. The names of peer reviewers who collaborate with Pamiętnik Teatralny are published once a year on the journal’s website.

The rules that apply to authors, editors, and peer reviewers are set forth in our “Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement.” The editors of Pamiętnik Teatralny who submit their texts to the journal are completely excluded from all stages of the review process.

The peer review process described below applies to research and review articles and essay-length book reviews (which are marked as refereed, if published). Texts such as shorter book reviews and reminiscences, that are only internally assessed, are marked as non-refereed on the website. The entire process from submission to editorial decision takes about 11 weeks, but may be prolonged for reasons beyond the control of the editors. Information about the next stages of the review process is provided to the authors via OJS.

STAGES OF PEER REVIEW PROCESS:

  1. Editors make a preliminary selection of submitted manuscripts on merit and to see if they fall within the purview of the journal. At this stage (within 5 weeks after submission), manuscripts may be rejected, sent back to the author for correction or further elaboration, or qualified for peer review.
  2. Editors invite peer reviewers on the basis of their competence and professional expertise. Editors make every effort to avoid selecting reviewers who may have competing interests that might prevent them from providing a fair and unbiased opinion. Each text must be reviewed by at least two reviewers. The stage of searching for reviewers may be prolonged despite the efforts of the editors.
  3. The manuscripts qualified for review are anonymized and sent to reviewers without any prior editing. This stage takes ca. 6 weeks. The editorial team reserves the right to prolong the peer-review process where needed.
  4. The reviewers assess the manuscripts in writing, using a review form available on the OJS platform. They evaluate, in particular, the originality of approach in the light of recent research, the relevance of methodology and its application as well as the soundness of argumentation and clarity of exposition. Reviewers are required to observe the principles of anonymity, confidentiality, and integrity. A review must include a well-grounded conclusion and recommendation to either accept the manuscript for publication, send it for corrections/revision, or reject it.
  5. If the suggestions and recommendations of peer reviewers diverge, the editorial board will invite a third peer reviewer or seek advice of a member of the Advisory Editorial Board.
  6. Editors pass on the suggestions made by peer reviewers to the authors, striving to observe the principle of anonymity. The editors also provide authors with editorial comments. Revised versions of the manuscript are posted by the authors in OJS.
  7. The final decision to accept the manuscript, send it for revision, or reject it is taken by an editorial board meeting on the basis of:
  • the quality of manuscript and the research it presents;
  • importance of the work for the research community and the readers of Pamiętnik Teatralny;
  • the peer reviewers’ comments;
  • legal requirements that are currently in force regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism.
