Narcissus in Love with Himself

Abstract
This article discusses the 1812 Warsaw performance of Louis-Antoine Duport, who appeared in ballet entitled Narcissus in Love with Himself in his own choreography. The author examines the review of the event by an anonymous critic of the Gazeta Warszawska (possibly Kantorbery Tymowski). He reads the analyzed review in the context of the history of dance criticism in Poland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and sets it against assessments of Duport's talent formulated by Jean-George Noverre, Julien-Louis Geoffroy, and Stendhal. The artist's relationships with Marguerite Joséphine Weymer (a.k.a. Miss George) and Maria Danilova provide an important backdrop to the main theme. The author uses contemporary Soviet research to adjust the earlier findings of English and Italian scholars.
