On the First German-Language Performances of Wyspianski's "Wedding" in Wiener Neustadt and Vienna

Abstract
This article is a contribution to research on the reception of Polish drama in German speaking countries. The author discusses the performances of Stanisław Wyspiański’s The Wedding by an amateur ensemble in Wiener Neustadt and Vienna in 1994 and 1995, initiated and directed by Tadeusz Krzeszowiak. The drama, translated by Karl Dedecius, was prepared for the jubilee of Wiener Neustadt and performed by students of the Höhere Technische Bundes- Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt. The performance was also shown in Kraków and Vienna. The Vienna performance was accompanied by an exhibition and a publication dedicated to Wyspiański. The author discusses the artistic premise and the reception of the performance. The background of the presentation is a brief discussion of the Viennese reception of Wyspiański's work (mainly paintings and the 1910 staging of Judges at the Intimes Theater) at the turn of the 20th century.
