About the Journal

History

The journal’s history dates back to the “Kwartalnik Muzykologiczny” edited by Adolf Chybiński, published in the years 1928–1933 and 1948–1950, and the bi-monthly “Muzyka”, published between 1950 and 1956 as the organ of the State Institute of Art (since 1959 the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences) and the Polish Composers’ Union. The first editor-in-chief (1956–1971) of the quarterly “Muzyka” was Józef Michał Chomiński, who was succeeded by Elżbieta Dziębowska (1972–1994), Katarzyna Morawska (1994–1996), Maciej Gołąb (1996–2002), Elżbieta Witkowska-Zaremba (2003–2015) and Paweł Gancarczyk (since 2016). The past and present of “Muzyka” is shown in a FILM from 2020.

Aims and scope of the journal

A quarterly “devoted to the history and theory of music”, as its subtitle specifies, “Muzyka” is the main Polish platform for presenting the results of musicological research. Although focussing on the Polish musical tradition in its various contexts, it also publishes texts on other issues, particularly related to the musical culture of the countries of Central Europe. The journal is open to interdisciplinary approaches combining music studies with history, literary and cultural studies, art history, ethnology and philosophy. It includes an extensive section containing reviews of academic publications. The authors include representatives of many Polish and foreign academic centres, publishing in Polish (with summaries in English) or English.

We welcome papers from both experienced scholars and those at the beginning of their academic careers. We only accept original manuscripts that fall within the scope of the journal. See also: peer review process.

Frequency and form of publication

Four issues of the journal are published each year: No. 1 by the end of March, No. 2 by the end of June, No. 3 by the end of September, No. 4 by the end of December. Each year, around 40 texts are published. The original version of the journal is the printed version. The journal is made freely available without embargo (from 2022/4 open access CC BY 4.0).
